The City of Bedford Public Works Department provides many of the basic services that affect the daily lives of everyone who lives and works in Bedford. Primarily, the department is responsible for all the things we take for granted on a daily basis: the administration, planning, maintenance, construction management and technical engineering of the City’s infrastructure.
This includes:
- 455 lane miles of street surface (24,000,000 sq. ft. of surface)
- 145 miles of water mains
- 1,200 fire hydrants
- 13,500 water service connection/meters
- 157 miles of sewer mains
- 2,750 manholes
- 2 miles of storm water system
- 3 water towers with 5,000,000 gallon storage capacity
- 3 water well pumping stations, each with the capacity to pump 1,000,000 gallons per day, with tank storage of 1,200,000 gallons
- 1,500 stop signs
- 5,000 street signs
- 250 vehicle/equipment units
The Public Works Department is staffed with a trained work force of approximately 50 employees. Operating funds are derived from a number of sources including user fees, utility charges, Street Improvement Economic Development Corporation, Sales Tax revenue and General Fund revenue. The department is also responsible for implementing the storm water, street, wastewater and water program of the Capital Improvements Plan. |
